Danielle
Hi, I’m Danielle Donaldson—an artist, author, and educator who loves bringing imaginative ideas to life with delicate details and carefully curated colors. My work often features playful forest creatures, whimsical landscapes, and cozy illustrations that invite a sense of wonder and curiosity.
With a background in fine art and graphic design, I combine creativity and practicality in everything I do. I’ve written two instructional books, creativeGIRL and The Art of Creative Watercolor, both inspired by my love of creative practice, color experimentation, and small-scale illustration. Through my online classes and workshops, I guide artists of all levels to explore their potential and develop their unique voice.
From my comfy studio in Southern California, I embrace the creative process every day, weaving stories and inspiration into all I create and share.
Creative Practicing
Creative practicing is at the heart of how I teach. It’s about finding your personal style through exploration, repetition, and inspiration.
Copying can be a positive and essential part of this process—as long as it’s approached with intention, respect, and common sense. Practice allows you to learn, grow, and eventually transform what inspires you into something truly your own.
If you’re here, you may have reached out about using my art or process in some way. Below, you’ll find my guidelines to help clarify how to approach this thoughtfully and respectfully.
Mission Statement
At the heart of my work is the belief that creativity should feel accessible, joyful, and deeply personal. I value the art of creative practicing—taking small, intentional steps to explore and develop your artistic voice. My goal is to inspire others to embrace their unique journey by blending imagination, technique, and storytelling.
In everything I do—whether it’s painting, teaching, or writing—I aim to cultivate a community of curiosity and encouragement, where artists of all levels feel empowered to create from a place of authenticity and joy.
TESTING YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE
-
Challenge 1: Create Without References
Put away your notes, handouts, sketchbooks, and turn off any class videos, Pinterest, or books. Now, try creating in your new style or direction without relying on outside materials. Was it frustrating and difficult, or did it feel natural and enjoyable?
Once you’ve finished, set it aside and try again—can you create something similar with ease and confidence? If this was challenging, don’t worry—it simply means you’re still on the path to finding your style. Keep practicing, and don’t be afraid to share your process along the way. If it was easy, congratulations—you may be ready to call it your own!
-
Challenge 2: Test Your Style
Send your artwork and a piece by an artist who inspires you (like mine or another favorite) to someone outside the creative world. Ask for honest feedback on whether the pieces look the same or different, and why. Be sure to choose someone who will give constructive insight rather than just love and support—your mom or best friend might skip the critique because they adore you too much! Thoughtful feedback can help you see if your style is truly your own.
-
Challenge 3: Compare and Adjust
Make a list of the similarities and differences between your art and the artist or style you’ve been practicing. Look closely at the supplies used, color palette, attention to detail, composition, and any other little elements. How does your work stand apart?
If you notice plenty of differences, big and small, you’re on the right track! If not, revisit your lists and explore what you might change. Focus on altering one element at a time to see if it works for you and helps refine your style. This thoughtful adjustment process is key to discovering what truly feels like yours.
