HEDGEHOGS are so darn sweet! This little dude is so full of yummy colors that I normally don’t gravitate to and all those little quills! So much detail work -which I LOVE!  Let’s dive in to our project using the basic steps of my creative process.

STUDY. PREPARE. PRACTICE. IMAGINE.

STUDY | Part of my process is a little study time – that always includes a quick visual search on the web. I simply type in the subject, clicking on links like this, this and even this. The trick is not getting caught up in the search part – this is a purely visual exercise to see what little tidbits your creative brain holds onto when you start practicing. I usually limit my time to no more than 5 minutes. You can print out examples to help you understand the anatomical version of your subject but be very careful about printing out other artists illustrations (for obvious reasons). IF you do, cut out the aspect of what speaks to you – like the paws or the color of the body and make a note. This will prevent you from  getting caught up in the dreaded copying thing and keep you on the right track to infuse your illustrations with your own creative goodness!

PREPARE | CLICK HERE for course supply lists.

  • Gather the supplies you need including the handouts and enough pre-cut squares to play along!
  • If you want to use the same paint colors as I do throughout the series, you can find them on the course supply list, too!
  • Are you in a good mood or have had too long of a day to learn something new?  Your mood plays a big part in your process, right? So part of preparation is making sure you save some of your energy for creative time! Don’t use it all up before you get to your studio!

PRACTICE | Sounds simple enough, right? This is the step that is skipped over most. The key to learning something new is by repeating the practice portion until it becomes creative muscle memory.  It can be frustrating and boring. But SO worth it!

IMAGINE | This is the best step in my process! It’s when I have practiced enough to make the subject mine and I get to play! New color combinations, little bits of mixed-media, and and unexpected details (like the addition of sweet pink cheeks!)

You are done! I hope you had fun and I will see you next time – we’ll be learning about how to micro-size our illustrations when we study A CRASH OF RHINOS.

Take care,
