Although I think learning and practicing 1-point and 2-point perspective drawing is pretty darn fun, a lot of you don’t. I get it, it’s kinda math-ish and hard, can be really repetitive and boring. So before I sneak a perspective drawing lesson into the mix, I thought we could spend some time working with advancing and receding colors to give our green goat some perspective of his own!
STUDY. PREPARE. PRACTICE. IMAGINE.
STUDY | Take a few minutes to really study the colors of the goat on your handout. Keep in mind the general idea that warm colors advance and cool colors recede.
- Using a traditional color wheel, what colors do you consider to be “warm” and “cool”?
- Try to identify the areas that are cool green and warm green. Where are they placed and how much?
- Review your watercolor palette and take note of the number of each of the following colors (primaries and secondaries)
- Red
- Blue
- Yellow
- Green
- Purple
- Orange
- What color do you have the most versions of? The least?
- Take a look at your neutral colors like gray, brown, sienna, ochre, etc. Do you have a lot of them or do you stick to colorwheel colors?
- What are your least used/most boring colors?
- Last, what is your favorite color? Your least favorite?
PREPARE | CLICK HERE for course supply lists.
- Gather the supplies you need including the handouts and enough pre-cut squares to play along!
- If you want to use the same paint colors as I do throughout the series, you can find them on the course supply list, too!
- I mentioned a few really inexpensive detail brush sets that I have added to the course supply list – they aren’t required but I wanted to share them just in case! I bought them specifically for my in-person classes in case someone wanted to try one so I can’t give you info on how they hold up in the long-term but they seem to be nice enough to work with while you are learning!

Whew! You are done! I hope you had fun and I will see you next time – we’ll be adding some mixed-media dimension, a bigger-than-usual drawing, and a cute little bird to A POD OF WALRUSES!
Take care,
Danielle
