Glazing is the process of adding transparent washes of color over already-dry washes. And it is vital to building your watercolor tool-box of techniques. Although the subject of this lesson is a pretty darn sweet walrus, the focus will be on the technique I used for the waves. I can’t wait to share!

STUDY. PREPARE. PRACTICE. IMAGINE.

STUDY |  Take a few moments to Google these amazing water-colorists and really study where glazing is used in their work. How does it add depth? How many layers can you count? Can you find an artist or two that has mastered the art of using multiple colors in their glazed areas? Can you find a few more who add luscious pattern?

Here are a few of my faves to search – remember, if you are using Google, just type their name in the Search box, and once it pulls up the Search, click on the word “Images” below the Search box!

  • Andrew Wyeth
  • Anna Mason
  • Steve Hanks
  • Marjolein Bastin
  • Maya Hanisch
  • Lori Roberts
  • Edward Hopper
  • Georgia O’Keeffe

PREPARE | CLICK HERE for course supply lists.

  • Gather the supplies you need including the handouts and enough pre-cut squares to play along!
  • If you want to use the same paint colors as I do throughout the series, you can find them on the course supply list, too!
  • I didn’t list patterned paper for this lesson (the sample has a paper mustache) because we’ll be painting them instead – but feel free to add the paper if you like it better!

PRACTICE| Grab the handouts and get to work! Glazing is a super important technique in watercolor. I suggest printing out a few copies actually – totally worth the extra practice!

IMAGINE | This is the best step in my process! (I will leave that sentence every lesson because its so true!) In this lesson, you’ve learned about one of the most important techniques in watercolor – glazing. It will most likely serve as a huge A-HA moment for you and all of a sudden your work is going to move along swimmingly! And this mellow walrus is a great way to practice – can you see where I used this technique? Hello, most beautiful waves! Could you revisit some of the other lessons in ATN5 and paint the subjects in a new close-up partially hidden way? And how many patterns can you add with this technique! Woot!
