I love the idea of something that is SO BIG in real life – like a RHINO – can be re-imagined into something so tiny that it can fit into the palm of my hand! This sweet little fella seems easy, but don’t let his size fool you. It’s a lot of work to draw this small!

STUDY. PREPARE. PRACTICE. IMAGINE.

STUDY | One of my favorite ways to get inspired is adding to my ever-growing collection of children’s books.  I love literally choosing a book based on its cover. (Yes, people DO judge books by their covers!) They often inspire me to grow my art by using different supplies, colors, or even drawing style altogether. These  books just came in the mail and I think they will serve as great inspiration for more micro-sized illustrations – each in very different ways! You can find the links to these books on your supply list.

  1. YOU ARE STARDUST | Inspires me with dimension and how it meets up with illustration.
  2. INFINITY AND ME | Inspires me with its old-fashioned drawing and white space.
  3. DREAM ANIMALS | Big animals and little peeps – need I say more?
  4. KITTENS FIRST FULL MOON | Love the bold lines and black and white (monochromatic) vibe!
  5. TINY ART | This is a grown-up book and one that originally inspired this lesson.

PREPARE | CLICK HERE for course supply lists.

  • Gather the supplies you need including the handouts and enough pre-cut squares to play along!
  • If you want to use the same paint colors as I do throughout the series, you can find them on the course supply list, too!
  • You’ll need a punch that can handle heavy watercolor paper.Don’t have a punch? Squares will work! Try rounding the corners or even adding those cool black paper photo corners to dress them up a bit.

You are done! I hope you had fun and I will see you next time – we’ll be learning how to zoom in and illustrate just part of an animal when we study A TRIBE OF GOATS.

Take care,
